TORCHE: Shine on My Old Ways

Words by Rahul Menon

Torche are a young stoner/sludge band from Florida, USA, and are quickly gaining popularity. With just three albums under their belt, they have become crowd favourites at a lot of festivals and tours, and it is no surprise that they are already making their first visit to Australia next month. What makes them unique, at least to me, is that they have an extremely heavy sound but their music isn't necessarily violent or angry. In fact, whenever I listen to their latest album Harmonicraft (2012), I always have a big smile on my face.

I had the opportunity to have a quick chat with bassist Jonathan Nuñez, about the band, the upcoming album, and their first visit to Australia.

DECAPITATED: Chanting the Blood Mantra

Words by Rahul Menon

One of the top names in the death/groove metal scene is Decapitated. They have quite the history for a young band, have been through a lot in their career and are now back with their sixth album entitled Blood Mantra.

I had the opportunity to have a chat with guitarist Wacław 'Vogg' Kieltyka. We took a moment to learn how to say his name right, but eventually settled to just call him Vogg. His full name has quite the pronunciation!

SCAR SYMMETRY: Neohumanity

Words by Mark Snedden

Scar Symmetry burst upon the scene in 2005 with their debut album, Symmetric in Design. In my opinion they are a band who has never met their commercial potential on a worldwide scale. They are a band that both epitomises and transcends melodic death metal. The interchange of clean melodic vocals and death growls takes their song writing and storytelling to a very high level. There are a lot of bands who have implemented this melody delivery but there a very few who execute it on this level.

The band has released five albums to date with their latest release, The Singularity Phase 1 Neohumanity, due next month. This release is a part of a three album concept revolving around transhumanism, which is an international cultural and intellectual movement with an eventual goal of fundamentally transforming the human condition by developing and making widely available technologies to greatly enhance human intellectual, physical, and psychological capacities. This is quite an ambitious topic, but if you know Scar Symmetry and their song writing, it is definitely consistent with their other releases and well within their grasp.

I recently spent some time with Per Nilsson, founding guitarist and song writer, about all things Scar Symmetry.

DEAD LETTER CIRCUS: National Tour Announced

The Music, New World Artists, UNFD and teamtrick

Dead Letter Circus

Off the back of their Reimagine Acoustic tour, which was sold out a month in advance, and their stunning “acoustic and strings” Stand Apart EP, which dropped out of the blue into #24 on the ARIA Charts, Dead Letter Circus are pleased to announce a national tour for December, with 7 shows reaching all capital cities, plus a couple of regional jaunts.

After co-headlining dates with Karnivool last summer, hitting all parts of regional Australia in May, and selling out their acoustic tour, Dead Letter Circus are ready to bring the full volume, massively epic, maximum impact stage show to the capitals for one final time before they head into the studio torecord their third album.

The band’s sophomore album, “The Catalyst Fire” debuted at number 2 on the ARIA charts and was triple j feature album of the week, with hits “Lodestar”, “I Am” and “Insider” all becoming live and radio favourites.

The National Tour will see Dead Letter Circus bring ambient/melodic post-rockers SLEEPMAKESWAVES along, and they’ll be joined on all dates by Perth’s Voyager.

Tickets go on sale Thursday 11th of September, and are sure to sell out fast, so don’t miss your opportunity to catch Dead Letter Circus in full flight.

Sydney ambient/melodic post-rockers SLEEPMAKESWAVES released their second album ‘Love of Cartography’ in July, debuting at #31 on the ARIA Chart & #2 on the AIR 100% Independent Charts. Lead single ‘Something Like Avalanches’ has found great support at triple j & community radio including FBi, 4zzz, PBS, RRR, and RTR, and SLEEPMAKESWAVES dynamic live show will be a worthy pre-cursor to Dead Letter Circus taking the stage.

In June 2014, Voyager released their fifth opus, 'V', which received incredible reviews from Metal Hammer, Prog Magazine, Classic Rock Magazine and Revolver Magazine. 'V' charted at CMJ US Loud Rock, the band were nominated for a 'Breakthrough Artist' award at the 2014 Prog Magazine Music Awards, they’ve sold out shows on their last Australian tour, and they’re showcasing at Bigsound 2014.
